About Us

Woodside Preschool is the oldest preschool operating in Eureka. We are fully accredited by the State of California, and staffed by a credentialed Teacher/Director. We are organized as a NonProfit and Parent Cooperative Corporation, having an elected Board of Directors composed of parents who are responsible for the school's operation.

We are very proud of our Adult/ Child ratio of 1:5, not usually found in other school settings. This allows for more opportunities for problem-solving and one-to-one interactions.

Our snack program is one of the only organic, vegetarian preschool snack programs around.

Hours of operation are 8am to 1pm, Monday thru Friday.

Philosophy

Our parent involvement approach gives children a bridge between home and school, providing a comfortable introduction to their first school experience. Our purpose is to provide a warm and inviting setting where children are free to play and learn.

Our innovative teaching approach stimulates cognitive, physical, and social growth. We encourage problem solving skills and hands-on experiences. This creates a more active learning environment, fostering Kindergarten readiness.

Our school provides parents with many opportunities to observe and participate in the learning process with their child. Our low tuition is possible only because of the participation of all parents in assisting in the classroom, repairing and maintaining school property, and conducting the school's annual fund-raising activity. Because of our parent participation, parents will have an unparalleled opportunity to be involved in the education of their child.

Curriculum

On a daily basis, children usually are offered such things as art, music, reading, exercises, academic basics, small and large group time, science, puppets, outdoor, and free play time.

Additional experiences include cooking, sign language, field trips, gardening, book clubs, special guests and events, and opportunity to check out books from the school library. Parent/Teacher conferences are held twice a year.

Parent Responsibilities

Parents work in the classroom on a rotating basis, one to two times each month (additional options are available for full-time working parents).

Each family has a "school job", assisting in the operation and maintenance of the school.

Parents participate in the Annual Gala Fundraiser by being a member of a committee and working during the Gala.

Each family is required to attend the evening General Meetings held throughout the year, and one Parent Work Day.

Positions on the Board of Directors are elected, each family having one vote.
